While we're on that topic

Subjects
So the trouble with using boxes with their own title is that I have to figure out what to use for the main post title.   So, I'm just going to make the main title relevant to whatever topic I broach first.   I'm not sure why I feel the need to explain this, but there you have it.
Sprinkle!
Somehow Sprinkle turned 9 months old.  I can't believe it!   She's crawling and pulling up now, so we've had to start baby-proofing like mad.  As predicted, she gets into EVERYTHING.    One of her first successful attemps at crawling involved crawling across the living room floor, grabbing a Crayola marker, pulling the cap off (!), and drawing all over her leg. Yes, I did just sit on the couch and watch her while she did this.  For the record, I did take the marker from her as she was about to start sucking on it.  Reese started crawling about the same age, but it was army crawling for the first month.  Madeleine skipped the army crawling and just got on her hands and knees one day.

She is a healthy 21 lb 6 oz and 28 inches long, and let's just say she's got the appetite to support her weight.   Really, we haven't found anything she DOESN'T like to eat.   What's really surpising to me, though, is her love of meat.   We had a difficult time with Reese with meats, and even today she's still picky.  For the most part, she'll only eat chicken or food we tell her is chicken (like fish).    Madeleine, on the other hand, loves all meat from brisket to tuna.  Her favorite school lunches are Salisbury Steak and Soft Beef Tacos.   Her caregivers have labeled those her favorites as she eats them faster than other meals, but she actually polishes off everything put in front of her.
Weezie!
Reese started the kindergartern program at her preschool.   It's a kinder program for children that did not make the age 5 cut-off for matriculation this year.   I'm a bit concerned about her being bored when she goes to "real" kindergarten next Fall, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there.  She brought home a packet of homework this week, and I think she might actually be bored now.   The worksheets consisted of such tasks as circling pictures that start with the letter C.  Reese was doing this two years ago and can actually read simple books at this point.    On one hand I'm glad she's not being stressed out and pushed too hard (really, homework at age 4?), but on the flip side, I do want to keep her engaged.  Gah, the balance between being *that* mom and *THAT* mom.
Sprinkle + Weezie!
I cannot do justice in describing the way I feel about my two girls and their relationship.   It just brings me JOY to watch them.     Madeleine absolutely adores Reese and just giggles and laughes whenever Reese is around.   Reese is fantastic with Madeleine, too.   Part of it is that Reese loves an audience, and Madeleine is her biggest fan, LOL.   She's a great help with Sprinkie - she helps me get diapers, clothes, etc., and keeps her entertained while I get dressed for work or make dinner.   They're going to be thick as thieves, and Jim and I are going to be in trouble, I think.

Cough, cough, sneeze

Sick

I've been feeling off for about a week, but I had to acknowledge the fact that I'm actually sick when the sore throat, sneezing, and coughing started.   I stayed home from work Thursday and Friday because I felt too ill(and contagious) to go into the office.  I was actually able to get some work done Friday morning and answered a few calls from one of my clients.  I made sure to throw in some extra coughing for some sympathy points.  I don't know where Madeleine gets that from...  (If I had been good about posting updates, then you would know Mads is Queen Fake-O Bake-O.   She fakes coughs, sighs dramatically, and get this, fakes CHOKING.   I'll hand her a wagon wheel baby snack, and before she puts it in her mouth she starts pretending to choke.  Her face actually gets red and her eyes watery!   Once someone (me) coos over her with concern ("are you okay, Baby?"), all is good.)

Working out

I've missed two workouts because of this cold thing I have going on, and I feel like a total sloth.   A month ago I WAS a total sloth because, barring a handful of pitiful jogs, I hadn't really worked out consistently since I was about 5 months pregnant.   Um, let's see, Sprinks is 9 months now...   I have a hard time motivating myself to work out unless I have a specific goal in mind (i.e., finish a race), so I called up a trainer I worked with several years ago after Reese was born.   We've been working out for five weeks, and I feel like a new person.  I've dropped some weight which I have to admit is foremost in my mind, but it's also been great for me mentally.   For an hour, it's just about me and the physicality of the workout, and Malik's as good as a hairdresser for gossip and venting.   He's also the perfect personality for me.   I can't work with trainers that are too nice, but I don't respond to the militant boot camp types, either.    He pushes me really hard but doesn't cross the line to being an asshole.  He's also one of very few trainers that does a *good* boxing workout.   I'll probably work out with him for another month or so to cement my routine and I'm back in the groove to continue on my own.

Labor Day Weekend

Nothing planned this weekend, which is nice.  I'm still feeling crappy, so not so nice considering it's a three day weekend that I can't take full advantage of.   <---I'm annoyed that I'm ending a sentence in a preposition but to be grammatically correct I'd have to sound like a pretentious jerk.  Jim just left to drop Reese off at the farm.   We'll all be up there Monday, but Reese is heading up early to hang out with her cousins.   I love that the girls have the farm and all the experiences associated with it.  Reese was there a few weekends ago, and in between the swimming, feeding cows, playing, she and Liz found a family of raccoons in the barn.  She just lit up telling me about how they, with Uncle Bryan's help, trapped the raccoons and then took them to the woods to release them.  You just don't get that experience in the city (unless you count the rat and possum experience which are not quite the same).
Ghost Chairs

I have been coveting Louis Ghost Chairs and want one.  I don't know why I'm so drawn to "a plastic lawn chair" (two guesses on where that description came from).  But I am.  Me want chair.  So if you see any coupon codes for sites like unicahome.com or allmodern.com, please send them my way.  I'm looking for a sign that I should get one ;-)

Jumping back in

 Boxes

Wow, it's been a while. Isn't this how one always starts a blog post after a long hiatus? Well, it HAS been a while. I'd like to say that between having two children and working full-time, I just don't have the time to post, but really, I find the time to fart around on Face book, don't I? I think it's more of a psychological impediment. In my mind, I'm waiting for when I have something "good" to say or when I have time to sit down and write a well thought-out post. So, I'm stealing an idea from a friend who started posting "boxes" around various random thoughts, ideas, and updates. Somehow, it alleviates the self-induced need I feel to post something funny (or at least not stupid). So, let the rambling commence!
Lameness

Well, that's all I got for today.

Thank Heaven for Little Girls...

Five years ago, Jim, nor anyone else for that matter, could not have imagined himself as a father of a little girl, much less two. When Weezie was a baby, he asked me how he should play with a little girl. I told him to play with her exactly as he would if she were a boy.

That philosophy has worked pretty well, and Weezie has enjoyed many games of wrestling, cops and robbers, and pirates. As she gotten older, however, she's taken the inevitable turn to all things pink and princess. Luckily, she still loves playing with cars, dragons, and other "non-traditional" girl toys; I definitely like the balance. Given my druthers I'd rather her be a tomboy than a girly-girl, but I try not to push her one way or the other too much.

Having girls makes for great entertainment (for me) when they talk to Daddy. Sprinks, of course, does not talk yet, but Weeze is a good indicator for the many fun conversations Jim has in store. Take this recent "very traumatizing" (his words) discussion with Reese in his car:

Reese: Do boys get big boobies?

Jim: No, Baby, boys don't get big boobies.

Reese: Will I get big boobies like Mommy?

Jim:
Turns up radio louder.

Reese: DADDY!

Jim:
Starts singing along with music.

Reese: DAAADDY! WILL I GET BIG BOOBIES LIKE MOMMY???"

Jim: When you get older.
Barfs a little in his mouth.

Reese: Tomorrow??

Jim:
Turns radio back up.

Reese: DAADDY! TURN OFF THE RADIO!!!!!

Jim: Ask your mom.

Wrestling at the farm

I sent Jim to drugstore, and this is what he brought back.

Note the intense concentration

Nothing but the best for my girls...

We don't have carpet in our house, so I had been looking at floor pillows for the family room for Reese. Most of the ones I found weren't quite big enough or a little too spendy for just a bit of fluff.

Jim and I were at Costco, and we came across a display of dog beds. Perfect! They were the right size, came with a removable cover for easy cleaning, and arguably sturdy since they're meant for, well, dogs. Even better was the fact that they were only $18.99.

I bought a brown one to coordinate with our living room furniture (hah! who am I kidding?!). The girls love it. I knew Reese would, but surprising Sprinkle loves it, too. She will have nothing to do with her fancy Boppy Bouncer or her Arm's Reach Co-sleeper, but the $19 dog bed? Heaven. I can lay her down on it, and she'll lie contentedly for a good 15 minutes. This is killer, people! In 15 minutes I can take a shower, unload the dishwasher, start a load of laundry...or get in some facebook time :)

Baby Hiccups & Smiles

Sprinkle started smiling consistently around 4 weeks. I love it! It makes up for the fact that she's a little more needy than Reese was, but even on that front she's getting a lot better as well. Woohoo!

Big Sister

Reese is SUCH a good big sister. She's always asking to hold Madeleine, and Mads really likes being held by her, too.

Last night I was at my parents' house doing laundry (our washing machine is still in storage). Mads was sleeping on the couch, and Reese was watching TV next to her. I was in the living room with them folding clothes.

Mads starting crying and before I even made a step towards her, Reese had picked her up, cradled her in her arms, and soothed her back to sleep - never once taking her eyes off the cartoon she was watching! Madeleine slept in Reese's arms for almost 30 minutes while Reese finished her cartoons (and I finished folding laundry, yay!).

Also sweet but bordering on creepy was our conversation this morning. Mads was crying, and Reese walked up and and said, "Sprinkle needs some milk." She lifted her shirt and declared, "I can feed her." I tried to explain to her that only mommies can feed babies that way, and she complained, "But why? I have boobies, too." I was tempted to tell her to "ask Daddy" because I'm mean like that, LOL.

Happy Mother's Day

For various reasons, I'm reminded today how blessed I am. I love my family, and I love my little stink-pot-pie :)

Here's a shout out to all the moms out there

One of these squares is not like the other.

Reese was a spider this year for Halloween. Unlike last year, she was totally excited to try on her costume, and she was quite excited to be a spider to go twick-o-tweating.

Over the course of the weekend up until Halloween, she went to four different carnivals, a party, and her school Halloween parade. It was a bit humorous seeing her amongst the other little girls. Of course I knew that a spider wasn't a "traditional" girl costume, but it was still a bit surprising to see that almost EVERY other girl her age and older was some variation of a princess or cheerleader. Luckily, it didn't phase her, and she loved showing everyone her extra appendages and crying out, EEE! I'm sure by next Halloween she'll be asking for a a tiara and all things pink, but for now, I love that she doesn't care that she's just a little bit different :)

Mommy & Daddy Went on a Cruise and All I Got Was this Parrot Poo...

J and I just got back from a wonderful cruise. Not only did it mark the first week-long vacation J has had it in four years (workaholic!), but it was also the longest we'd been away from Weezie.

A few highlights from our trip:

  • Winning 500 nickels after I put a quarter in the nickel slots
  • Hitting the dealer in the head with a die the first time I tried playing craps (oopsie!)
  • Renting scooters and getting lost in Honduras trying to find the beach
  • J's phone not working and him actually being able to relax, YIPEE!!
  • J surprising me with my birthday present a week early. He got me THE watch I have been lusting after for years.
  • Getting to see our baby after being away for 7 days

http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=aoarz81.8alkjg4h&x=0&y=j1qfg0

While we had a fabulous time, we found ourselves talking about her all the time. She stayed with J's sister and her family for the week. According to all accounts (including Weezie's), she had a blast. I knew she would - she ADORES her cousins and her "Aunt Monny" and "Uncle Bowing", but it was still great to hear all the Weezie stories. Thanks again, Monny!

Talk to me baby...

I was practicing colors with Reese and she correctly identified pink, yellow, red, purple, blue, green, and orange...

in VIETNAMESE!

This is a big milestone for her because she knows her colors in both languages now. If I ask her to name the color in English, she'll name the English words, but if I ask her in Vietnamese, she responds in Vietnamese! This really warms my heart because I often feel like I'm fighting a losing battle as far as her feeling part of "my" culture/background.

So she officially knows more than J does now, lol.

I'm a sucker

Reese loves to play in the toy kitchen at daycare, so I decided to buy one for home. Since we might have a second child, I decided to spend a little more and get one that was sturdy and could accommodate two. I think Aunt Chele would approve, no?

Cousin Weezie

Weeze has a new baby cousin! One of my best friends, R, had her baby yesterday. R called me , and I was so happy to hear mommy and baby are doing well. I am sooo thrilled for her (and admittedly a wee bit jealous, lol!)

I cannot wait to meet baby Elise, and I love the idea of of Weezie and Elise playing together one day.

Congrats, G's!

Ruh-roh, don't tell mommy

Saturdays are daddy-daughter day. It gives J a chance to bond with Weezie and me a respite from being bossed around and generally abused (and I'm not talking about work).

Earlier, I called J to see what they were up to since they had been gone a few hours.

"Oh, nothing. We just left the Urgent Care Center."

WHAT!!!!?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was on the verge of freaking out, but I stayed calm enough for him to explain. Deep breath...deep breath...must resist the urge to yell, "what did you let happen to my baby??!!!"....deep breath...

They had been in the grocery store parking lot in the car when Weezie suddenly whispered, "uh oh. rock in baby nose". J pulled over and saw that she was holding a small pebble in her hand. He looked, and sure enough, she had a rock lodged up her nose. Way up.

J took her to a nearby urgent care office and decided (grrr) that he'd spare me the panic (chicken!). They were placed in a room, and while waiting for the doctor, J started making balloons out of latex gloves for Weeze.

Well, the powder on the gloves made her sneeze and...you guessed it... she sneezed it out.

So all's well that end's well. J brought back the pebble for me to see. Definitely going in the baby book. Thanks for the Mother's Day gift, baby :)

Bit the bullet

In reference to my post from last summer: http://fear-and-trembling.blogspot.com/2006/06/away-from-little-fingers.html

Still the same problem, different apartment. Boy, I'm ready for our house to be completed. Well, make that, I'm ready to actually start a house that we will actually move into, and then actually move into it, actually.

Frustrated while cleaning today, I decided to look at the bookshelves again. They had raised the prices of the individual bookshelves since last summer (boo hiss!), but they still had a little byline "buy one tall and one short for $398". I added two to my cart and saw that the total did not reflect the discount pricing. I clicked on their online chat support, and they said that that pricing was supposed to have been removed, but that they would honor it. Woohoo! Better yet, they were running a promotion for free shipping (normally $60 for the two shelves). I'm very pleased with DWR and will shop there more often if I ever win the lottery, lol

Is this wrong?

As we were putting our shoes back on in gymnastics class, Weezie noticed that one of the other little girls had flower Jibbitz on her Crocs. As typical of Weeze (and probably any other 2-year old), she cried out "I want that!".

A few days later, J and I were at the store, and we saw a display of Jibbitz at the checkout. They didn't have any flowers left, so we got the next best things. I have to admit, even if there had been flowers, we probably still would have picked out the lizard and the skull-and-crossbones. They're just more Weezie to us.

I was a wee bit worried that she wouldn't like them, but after we put them on her shoes, she delightedly looked at her feet and said, in her best pirate voice, "Arggh!".

That's my girl :)

It's awfully hot in here

As I write this, I'm sitting on the floor of my walk-in closet. Why? Because it's 10:30 PM, and we have attempted for the third time to put Weezie to bed. She's screaming like a banshee, and I can't bear it. It's my inability to listen to her shrieking that's gotten us in this mess, because I inevitably go in, take her out, and let her play. I'm trying to break the cycle, hence the self-imposed exile.

She used to go to bed at 8 PM on the dot with usually no protest, but for the last several months she's been pushing and pushing to stay up later. She's learned that shrieking will result in extra playtime. While I can ignore it when she throws tantrums during the day, for some reason the bedtime screaming really kills me. I hate to admit it, but it bothers me not so much in a "my poor baby" kind of way, but more of a "please, someone poke me in the head with a sharp stick because it would be less grating" sort of way.

It's times like this where I feel like an utter failure as a mother. It was easier when she was younger. Granted, I still doubted myself often, but I could hang on to the fact that I was at least doing some things "right" like breastfeeding, feeding her home-made organic fruits and veggies, keeping her on a regular schedule... Now that she's two, she's suddenly become so much more stubborn. I can't get her to eat anything healthy, she watches TV regularly, and she often stays up until 10 o'clock or later. I feel like I'm completely letting her down by not being a good enough mother. Sigh.

My little Mynah Bird

Weeze is quite the Chatty Cathy now, and she's picking up words and phrases left and right. This isn't necessarily a good thing, as I learned when I was putting her hair in pigtails. I accidentally snagged her hair, and she looked up at me with her sweet little face and said, "Daaamn...It." Err, don't know where she got that one from.

Lately she's been saying, "aww, man!" quite frequently when she drops something or if something doesn't go her way. I'd been feeling guilty about that one - I didn't recall saying that, but she only has to hear a word/phrase once to pick it up. I was watching Dora the Explorer (oh, I remember the days when I didn't even know who that was!), and one of the characters exclaimed, "aww man!". I excitedly told J, "Yay! She didn't learn it from me! She learned it from TV!!!!"

I'm a great mom, aren't I ;-)

Bliss

Weezie woke up crying about an hour into her nap this afternoon. I went into her room, and she was standing in her crib calling out, "mommy, momma". Awwww... I scooped her up, and she rested her head on my shoulder. She seemed still tired so I snuggled with her on the couch. As I lay there with her, it struck me how incredibly lucky I am. How many moms get to do this? Granted, it's not always like this (sometimes I joke I'm going back to work because it's easier), but I know that I should be counting my blessings. We ended up napping together for another hour. It doesn't get much better than that!

Help, there's a bird on my head!

Halloween was a blast despite Weezie's initial very physical protestations against wearing her costume. Like any good mother, I wrestled her to the ground and wrangled the outfit onto her. Just a few tears and scratches later (oh, and Weezie cried, too), voila - my perfect little peacock!

We went to my SIL's house so Weeze could go trick-or-treating with her cousins. She adores her cousins, and it's hilarious watching them play. It's as if she doesn't realize they're older than her (and sizeably larger seeing that their parents are 6' and 6'5", respectively). They live in a much more kid friendly neighborhood than we do (read: no crackhouses to avoid, bums that Weeze might trip over). She had also organized a hayride to take the children from house to house - each home is on a several acre lots, so it's a lot of walking for short little legs.

I was a bit apprehensive about how Weezie would do, but she had a wonderful time. She wasn't frightened by all the costumed kids and she quickly got the hang of trick-or-treating (at first she was taking candy out of her basket and putting it into others' - J quickly corrected that, lol). Every time the hayride stopped, she'd pop up, grab her basket, and yell "all right!". She hung with the big kids all night, too.

I can't wait until next year, and I'm thinking I have one more year before I hear "I want to be a princess!". Hmmm, shark, peacock, what embarrassing costume can I put her in next???

Enron, Wal-Mart, and Fisher-Price

If you're a parent of a child under 5, then I won't have to explain. Several months ago, Fisher Price started sending out teasers about the 10th anniversary Tickle Me Elmo. Except they didn't call him that - they just put ads with a shadowy image with "TMX Elmo" across the body. "What will TMX Elmo do? Find out September 19th!"

Weezie loves Elmo, so in August I considered pre-ordering the TMX Elmo (retail price $39.99) to make sure I had one for Christmas. Even though I didn't have a child at the time, I remember the huge demand for the Tickle Me Elmo when they came out 10 years ago. J said I was being silly, so I decided not to pre-order.

Well, when they were released Sept. 19, they sold out of the stores immediately, and people started selling them on ebay for $200-$300. I consoled myself with the fact that Weeze is too young to not know that she's "the only kid that doesn't have one" and that daddy ruined Christmas, but when she started squealing with delight when she saw a commercial for TMX Elmo, my heart broke! I know, I know, I'm being suckered in just like "they" planned!

So last week, my girlfriend showed me a flyer from Wal-Mart - TMX Elmo's advertised for 34.98 beginning October 1. She said they also had signs all over the stores - TMX Elmo's coming October 1! My girlfriend spoke to a lady in the toy department, and she said they'd be putting them out at 7AM today with a limit of 2 per person.

Now I hate Wal-Mart and avoid going there. For my baby, however, I'm willing to trek to Wal-Mart at 6 in the morning. When we arrive, we find out that they had put them out at midnight! And get this - they had only 5 for the whole store! If we had gotten there at midnight, we probably wouldn't have gotten one anyway. They said that Wal-Marts all over town were getting just a few, and some didn't even get any.

I'm not really mad about not getting Elmo - was just taking a chance that we'd get one, but I think it's terrible that they would advertise so much about having them when in reality they only had a few for each store, and some stores didn't even get any!

So, I'm boycotting Wal-Mart. Predatory pricing didn't move me. Unfair treatment of workers? Eh, not my problem. But playing on a momma's need to get her baby the "It" toy of the year? I'm never stepping foot in Wal-Mart again!

Yes, I realize Fisher-Price is playing games with us well. My guess is that they're purposely only releasing limited quantities and will flood the market right before Christmas. Unfortunately, Fisher-Price is a little more difficult to boycott when you have a 2-year old.

More like her father every day...

Look at what I caught Weezie doing:

Setting a good example for my daughter

One of my major pet peeves is people who drive Suburbans/Tahoes/Escalades/Yukons and don't park them properly. I drive an SUV, so I don't have anything against them, but it drives me batty when I'm trying to find a parking spot and some big-ass car is double-parked. I will be the first to admit that I'm a terrible driver, but I make a concerted effort to park so that there is plenty of room on either side of my car. I complain so much about it that my girlfriend gave me a booklet fake parking tickets to give to people. You fill in the time/date/car model, and it's preprinted with:

You are an inconsiderate person. This is not a real ticket, but it should be. Because of your rude and lame attempt at parking you have taken enough room for an army and a circus. You have received this ticket in hopes that you will learn to think of others before parking in the future. You probably change lanes without using a turn signal too. I hope your engine blows up during rush hour on your birthday.

I couldn't open my door tonight at dinner because of a bad parker, so I gave out my first violation. It's terrible and juvenile, but it made me laugh, and that's all that matters :) My only regret is that I didn't stick around long enough to see the car owner's reaction when they found the ticket under their wiper.

Not sure what this says about my parenting skills. I guess I should be glad she wasn't singing "My Lumps".

We closed on the house, woohoo! I'm chronicling my adventures in a separate blog.

Baby Einstein

We went to the bookstore last night, and I bought some picture flashcards for Weezie. I picked out a few cards to work with her this morning, and she immediately learned "apple". It's so neat to see the difference in her cognitive abilities in just a short period of time. A few months ago, she probably would have repeated "apple", but not really learned the word as she did this morning. If I put several cards down and ask her to pick out the apple, she'll pick the right one and say "apple". She already knows banana, so I tested her by asking her to pick out the banana, and she guessed correctly!

On non-baby news, I was reading O (Oprah's mag) and found out about free workouts on ExerciseTV - it's a free video on demand channel offered by some cable providers like Time Warner. Who knew?!

It's like having access to a free library of workout videos since you can turn on demand, pause, etc. Weez and I did a short 10-minute pilates workout together this morning. She likes to copy my moves when I exercise (her squat imitation is hilarious!), and she loves to climb on me when I do floor work. Not good for my form, but it's fun :)

Vy Trump

On Saturday, one of my girlfriends and I drove to see the house I'm remodeling. I'm armed with a notebook and a digital camera so that I can start taking notes. We don't close until the end of the month, but the owners have given us copies of the keys so that we can start getting contractor bids. After driving down the street a few times and not seeing the house, I sheepishly call J.

"Um, what's the address of the house again?"

Once I get on the right street, I quickly find the house and we hop out. And I realize I forgot to bring the keys. So much for getting off on a good start.

In any case, it was good to get another look at the outside of the house and bounce ideas off my friend. I tell her about the crazy lady who lives next door - she had stopped J and said, "you know the house is haunted, right? It's filled with ectoplasm." Hmmm, yeah...

While we were chatting, a little old lady walked over from across the street. Ella has lived in the neighborhood for over 60 years, and she's known both respective owners of the home. Of course, I had to mention the neighbor saying the house was haunted. "Eh? Ecto what?" Not that I really thought the house was haunted, but Ella confirmed that no had died in the home and that yes, the neighbor was crazy. Side note: when I mentioned this to J, he told me I should never ask if someone died in a house since once I know, I'd have to disclose it when selling. Ah, so much to learn!

Calgon take me away

For my birthday last year, J gave me a gift certificate for a day at Fiori. Since my birthday is coming up again in a few weeks, I finally booked an appointment before the certificate expired.

OMG, why have I not gone there sooner? I'm not really a spa person (i.e., I like them, but I don't go very often), but this was definitely the nicest spa to which I've been. I'm really picky about...uh...hygiene, and I usually find some fault. Usually something minor like the towels not being quite plush enough for the amount of money I was paying. OK, that's not really a hygiene thing, but one of my typical "Gawd, you're so picky" complaints. I never actually complain because I realize it's no big deal - only J knows me enough to perceive that split-second flash of my nose wrinkling.

The owner is a business acquaintance of J's, and he built the building from the ground up. Even though it's a new building, it manages to exude an "old-world" Mediterranean feel. It even has a grotto with hot tub/pool! This is impressive since basements are unheard of in Houston. I can't say enough of the experience - everyone was helpful and sweet without being fake/overbearing. In between sessions, you could lounge in the "quiet room" or use the pool, hot tubs, or steam rooms. I had a wonderful massage, facial, manicure, and pedicure. It was incredibly relaxing, although every once in a while I would start, panicking, "Where's Weez?!" before I'd remember she was with J for the day. Of course I've had days away from Weez before, but never just a day of just quiet tranquility.

Some friends and I are going to the Arizona Biltmore in November for a spa weekend. I was excited about going before, but I'm looking forward to it even more now that I've had such a wonderful spa experience. It figures that I'd now become a spa junkie once I became jobless, LOL.

Mas palabras

Weeze learned two more phrases in Vietnamese while on vacation with my parents:
  • hut roy - hết rồi (all gone - shakes her hands while saying this)
  • wang rack - quẳng thùng rác (throw trash in the trash can. If you tell her "quẳng thùng rác", she'll repeat it, walk to the garbage can, and then throw whatever she has in her hand away.)
My little bilingual baby!

Moms gone wild

About once a month, some friends of mine and I go out for a girl's night out. Since three of are moms, it's usually pretty low key. Our usual haunt is the bar at La Griglia, although last time we ended up at JR's, a local gay bar. Since Weezie goes to bed at 8, it works out well since I leave after she's gone to bed and I'm usually back by the time she wakes up (I always sleepover at A's after we go out).

Last night we didn't end up getting to La Griglia until 10:30 and the restaurant bar closes at midnight. I managed to drink three grey-goose tonics and two Kamikazie's that were sent over to the table before we left. I didn't feel too tipsy last night, but this morning I felt like crud. I don't know what's worse, the headache, or knowing that I had about 900 calories worth of drinks, LOL.

In any case, I still had a lot of fun. While I love being Weezie's mom and wouldn't trade it for the world, it's nice to be out once in while with just other adults.

I can taste the margaritas now...

As we were driving to my parents' house for the requisite weekly Weez visit, I was thinking about how summer was coming to an end and we had yet to make a trip to the beach (a real beach, i.e., NOT Galveston). By the time we arrived, I had already mapped out a trip for the whole family - my parents, sister, Weez and I renting a condo in South Padre for a week, and J joining us for 3-day weekend (work's too hectic right now for him to take a full week off). Everyone thought it was a great idea, so I immediately made arrangements for the condo and flights for J and one of my sisters (who has to return early to start back at work August 8).

Interestingly enough, because of the last minute plans, I ended up booking the same condo we used to go to on our family vacations in Padre when I was a kid. I'm excited since I love going to the beach, and it'll be fun to spend time with my family and vacation with them as an adult. Not to mention the 24/7 access to free babysitting :)

We're leaving next Tuesday and driving to McAllen to visit my Aunt and her family for a day before moving on to South Padre (1.5 hour away from my Aunt's home). It's about 5 hours to McAllen, so I'm a bit worried about Weezie being in the car so long. Luckily, she will have my mother and sister in the car to be at her entertainment beck and call. Her last long trip was when she still a wee babe and we were trying to leave Houston to avoid Hurricane Rita. We were in the car for 7.5 hours and traveled 25 miles - not something I'd like to ever repeat. Hopefully this trip will be a might less stressful.

In other news, J found a property in the Heights that's perfect for flipping. We drove by together on Sunday and made an offer. The owner accepted, and we should be closing August 30th. Woohoo! Now, normally I wouldn't get terribly excited since J does this pretty regularly, but we've decided that this flip will be my project. I've wanted to get more involved, and now I actually have the time to do so. The house needs top to bottom work - rewiring, sheetwork, the whole shebang. It's a small house, though, so I'm hoping I won't get too overwhelmed. Obviously I'm going to rely a lot on J's experience for the contractor negotiations. I can never hope to be as good as he on financial negotiations, but I think I'll hold my own as far as cracking the whip and getting things done. Famous last words?

Birkenstocks come in different colors, right?

Weezie's shoes were getting snug, so off we went to Stride-Rite to get some new sandals. It pains me to buy shoes there (their average baby shoe is $40), but they have the best selection of wide width shoes for children. While I don't see the resemblance when everyone tells me she looks like J, she most definitely got her father's feet. J just got a pair of tennis shoes in 14EEEE. Yes, that's 4 E's.

They had a bunch of the cutest sandals on sale, for about half off original price - I was stoked! We got a few 6W's to try on and... they were too narrow. Yes, my baby needs Extra-Wides.

They only had one pair of sandals in XW, not on sale of course. So $45 later, we left with the most boring, plain white sandals in the store. I know it's ridiculous, but I was sad because she couldn't get the cute shoes with flowers or the ones with flashy lights (she would have loved those!). I'm a shoe horse (I probably have a hundred pair;I've lost count), so I became even more sad when I started to think about how she'd have a hard time finding shoes when she's older, when she'll actually care.

Yes, I realize that I should just be happy she's a healthy, happy baby...and that she has a really stable base, LOL.

The good ones always are....

I am devastated. I just found out from reputable sources (the Internet) that my boyfriend, Anderson Cooper, is gay. This ranks up there with finding out George Michael is gay ("George, not George! But I wanted to marry him when I was a teenager!")

With as many gay friends as I have, it's obvious gaydar is something you're born with and can't cultivate.

Off to sulk now.

Bueller? Bueller?

I wonder if anyone reads this blog - I think I have 2 readers, LOL. I guess it would help if I actually let people know I have a blog.

I took Weezie to her first music class at Gymboree (she's had music classes before, but not at Gymboree). As she normally is when she's around new people, she was very shy and wouldn't leave my lap. She wouldn't sing or clap along to any of the songs because she was too busy staring down the other children and teacher. Part of me (the hypercompetitive, Type-A part) wanted to scream out, "She sings all the time! And dances! Oh, you should see her dance! Did I tell you she raps?", but I think I managed to be encouraging without pushing her too much. I hope once she's gone to a few classes she'll open up more - the daycare told me she loved Music & Me (the music classes she took once a week), and she stops in her tracks when music shows come on TV.

After class, I went to Ikea to pick up a little kid's table/chairs so she'd have a place to color (other than the wall, which she's already done). I made the mistake of trying to put it together while Weezie was still awake. As if putting together Ikea "furniture" isn't frustrating enough, Weeze ripped the instructions to shreds and then insisted on helping. Let me tell you there are few things scarier than a 1 1/2 year old coming at you with a hammer in one hand and a screwdriver in the other. An hour later, I finally had it setup and immediately regretted my decision to buy a table from Ikea. I don't think it's going to survive the WMD (Weasel of Mass Destruction). I can't wait until we're back in a house so that I can buy real furniture again.

Speaking of the house, we drove by the lot yesterday. They've cleared off the old house on the property and have started building out the alleyway. The existing alleyway is just grass and not level, so we're leveling, paving, and installing a drainage system. We're started about two months later than planned, but surprisingly, my blood's not boiling yet. Because of our last building experience, I went in expecting delays, and I know that there will be many more to come. It helps that I do like living where we are now. The location is fantastic, and I love never having to park my car. If we had more space, I could live here indefinitely. At this rate, we may have to, LOL.

18 months update

A little late, but Reese had her 18 month appointment a few weeks ago. Inspired by our friends the Handkes who recently posted baby Van's stats, I thought I'd post Reese's.

She is in the 70th percentile in both height and weight at 25lbs 3oz and 32" long. Yay for being proportionate!

Words:
  • Dog-dog
  • Elmo
  • Mama
  • Dada
  • Way Dada? (Where's dada?)
  • Ba-ba (drink)
  • Baby (for babies and her Stitch doll)
  • Shoes
  • Ball (balls and grapes/blueberries)
  • No
  • Hi
  • Yah (yes)
  • Mine!
  • Allo? (hello?)
  • Boon (balloon)
  • Clock
  • Ta tu! (thank you)
  • Up & down! (bounces when she does this)
  • Bubbos (bubbles, she says this with an accent on the second syllable)
  • Coo-Coo (cookie and crackers)
  • Sassy (name of her friend Mia's puppy)
  • Bye-bye!
  • Poopy!
  • Ong ngoai ("grandfather" in Vietnamese)
  • Ai day ("Who is that?". I don't think I spelled that right. She also uses it for "What's that" as well. Incorrect, but still cute)
  • Um-um (eat)
I put exclamations after some of the words because that's how she says them. She is also a veritable chatterbox of other nonsensical sounds I haven't quite deciphered yet. It's really fascinating seeing her communication skills progress - though I'm quite over thinking that "Mine!" is cute. She also loves to sing along to children's songs like Elmo's World, Wheels on the Bus, and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. She doesn't say the words exactly, but she'll make sounds in the same rhythm

My parents are convinced that when she says dog-dog, she's actually saying cho-cho (dog-dog in Vietnamese). They also have a dog that is similar in size to Sassy, and they think she's trying to say "Chelsea" (their dog). It's quite funny - kind of like the sound that a dog makes (bow-wow! ruff-ruff!) is different in other countries (wau-wau in Vietnamese, bau-bau in Italian, etc.)

The words we do agree that she's saying in Vietnamese (Ong ngoai and Ai day) are perfectly accented. She also repeats many of the words my parents say to her, but since she doesn't use them consistently, I haven't included them in the list. I've been trying to teach her Vietnamese, but it's difficult since for all intents and purposes, Vietnamese is my second language. I speak it fairly well, but since I don't "think" in Vietnamese, I often forget to speak to her in it. Oh, yeah, Whitey's a problem, too, since he only knows how to say pho (noodle soup), bun (vermicelli), and ba ngoai (grandmother). Though I suppose Reese is all set if she needs to ask my mom for lunch :)

Cluck, cluck!

RG and crew have raved about this roast chicken recipe, so I've been meaning to try it. Feeling industrious this morning, I went to Central Market to pick up the ingredients. Even though the recipe is really simple, I didn't have any of the ingredients on hand (chicken, kosher salt, thyme). After some pointers over IM from RG and four viewings of this trussing video, the bird was in the oven.

When it was ready, I excitedly pulled it out of the oven. It looked amazing! I didn't think to snap a picture until I had already started carving, so it doesn't capture how wonderful it looked. Nice enough to impress your guests! I'm pleased to say that it tasted just as good as it looked. Scrumptious! The skin was golden and crispy; the meat moist and flavorful. Like many who make this chicken, I ate my serving standing up, standing over the cutting board, LOL.

Even Reese loved it! Reese generally does not like meat, and even she was won over. More often than not, I have a really hard time getting her to eat anything other than pasta and bread. If there was ever any question whether she is my daughter (okay, not much of a question since she CAME OUT OF ME) her love of all things starchy is definitely a trait from me.

This recipe is definitely a keeper.

TGIS!

If it's one thing that I love almost as much as food, it's sleep. I LOVE to sleep, and have a talent for being able to nap anywhere (which comes in handy when you're backpacking through Europe. I've napped everywhere from a cold, damp doorway in Salzburg to an overpacked, overheated train stuck somewhere between Nice and Pisa filled with...ahem...pungent Italians). I'm definitely one of those people that needs 8 hours of sleep. Unfortunately, becoming a mother has put a big dent in the amount of sleep I get. On weekdays, I usually get about 7 hours of sleep a night. I know, that seems like a lot of sleep, but when I said I need 8 hours, I REALLY MEAN I need 8 hours.

On Saturdays and Sundays, however, Jim lets me sleep in while he watches Weezie. I do feel a wee bit guilty that he still takes weekend morning duties even though I've stopped working, but the flip-side is that I'm much more pleasant to be around when I've gotten a full 8 hours. I slept until 10:15 this morning - Heaven!

Like megmoo, I still look forward to weekends even though I don't go to the office anymore. It's not just the ability to sleep in; Jim's home and I love just putzing around being a family. We usually don't have anything too exciting planned - we'll visit with friends, hang out by the pool, that kind of thing. It's incredibly relaxing because there's no agenda we have to follow or appointment we have to make like we have to on weekdays.

LMAO

Since I've been on a health kick, I've been perusing various blogs about losing weight/getting fit/etc. From The Fat Man Walking site (one man's journey across the US to lose weight and to find himself), I found The Lost Hawaiian. Josie is freakin' hysterical. I started reading her archives from the beginning and am working my way back to current entries. I'm still in Sept. '05, but I think I've lost a few pounds laughing so hard.

Blah Blah Blah Blah....

I thought that I'd be blogging more once I became a SAHM, but alas that has not been the case. In pondering why I don't write more often, I came up with a dozen reasons involving all the quality time I'm spending with Weez (you know, like when I've fallen asleep on the couch while she's watching Elmo for the 5 billionth time). In truth, I realized that I don't post because I don't think I have anything to write that anybody would actually want to read. I mean, isn't that the point of blogging? To provide insight into your life while being at least mildly amusing?

In any case, I've decided to just blog without concern if it's actually interesting in an effort to use a few brain cells on something other than memorizing all the words to "Wheels on the Bus".

Which segues me nicely into today's topic - my life as a stay-at-home-mom. It's been about six weeks since my last day at work, and to be honest, I thought that I'd be bored to tears by now. I'm happy to say that I'm having a blast. It's not quite the same as managing multi-million $ IT projects, but it's still incredibly rewarding. While some things haven't changed at all - I still find myself having to deal with temper tantrums and cleaning up someone else's messes - the primary difference is that I go to bed looking forward to the morning when I can hang out with the Weez again.

Gotta walk the walk....

I just got a new workout video (Turbo Jam - similar to Tae Bo but with better music and choreography), and checked out the instructor's blog. She had a great post about raising our children to have good body images. Even before I had Reese, this was a concern of mine. To put it succintly, I don't want Weez to be as screwed up as I was. I still have my off days, but I am a thousand times better than I used to be. I remember being 25 lbs lighter than I am today, and lying in bed crying because I was "too fat". These days, I'm carrying 10-15lbs more than I'd like, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it (my trainer does enough of that for me, LOL!).

Anyhoo, she gave the following tips that I think all parents, especially those of young girls, should read:

1. Never disparage your own physique in their presence. (We all have body parts to complain about, but do it in the privacy of your own bathroom!)

2. In the presence of kids avoid negative words to describe someone, like “fat”, “huge”, “chubby”, “Lazy”.

3. Occasionally compliment your kids muscles, energy, strength, or healthy glow. Avoid comments about weight or negative reference, even of a joking nature with regard to their body.

4. Don’t allow the word “fat” to be used in your household unless you’re describing a paycheck. It’s easy. In fact, I remember my son, not sure what word to use, asking me, “What do we call someone who has a big, big, big, big body?” My reply, “Someone who needs to try Turbo Jam.”

5. Try a little spin control. Make a point to comment on how “unhealthy” or “weak” stars look when their appearance is obviously under weight, malnourished and skeletal. Conversely praise those who exercise, eat right and maintain a healthy appearance and have nice muscle tone.

6. Talk about foods that make you “energized and strong” and never declare you’re on a diet. Instead, announce you’ve decided to stick to a healthy diet, which means moderation, not deprivation.

7. Make healthy eating and fitness central in your life, but declare nothing “off limits”. All foods are fine, in moderation. When my kids want chocolate or ice cream or even french fries, I make a point of telling them it’s fine because they were so active that day. If they want more than their share I remind them that it may make them feel slow, sluggish and cranky.

8. When your children make a healthy food choice on their own, praise them and reinforce their choice.

9. When asked why don’t you want a particular food in the house, avoid condemnation, like “because I don’t want to get fat.” Instead try, “Because it slows me down” or “I just prefer food that helps me feel healthy”

10. Children often confuse boredom with hunger. When your child declares, “I want something to eat,” and you’re hunch is dull drums, get in the habit of offering an activity instead of a bag of junk. The trick is not to mention boredom or food. Instead, retort with an instant activity, “Hey, want take the dog on a walk with me?”

11. Lastly the best thing you can do for your children is to create for them a safe and supportive environment to develop their own self-confidence and unique identity. Allow them to fail and praise them for their courage to try. Don’t shield them from every heartache and life lesson. The number one common trait of those diagnosed with eating disorders is an overly involved, over-bearing parent. Yikes! May the force be with us!

Away from little fingers...

We're living in a highrise while our home is being built, and while I enjoy living here, we really miss our library. We put about 50 boxes of books in storage, but we've already accumulated more books than the apt. bookshelves can accommodate. Of course, this lack of space is exacerbated by the fact that Weezie has claimed the bottom two shelves of all the bookcases. We don't really have any more space to put additional shelving, unfortunately.

I ran across these cool bookshelves from Design Within Reach that might solve our problem. I think we can squeeze a couple in our bedroom, to which Weeze generally does not have access. The tall shelf holds ~90 books, and the short holds ~50. My only hesitation is the price - it's $250 for tall and $200 for the short (with a $25 discount on each if you buy multiple). What do you think, worth it?

No, I'm not a hypochondriac

I wonder if there's a special term for people who have hypochondria about their children...

I took Weez to the pedi today. After I explained her symptoms (low grade fever, possible ear infection, cough, runny nose), they proceeded to check her out. 97.4 temp, ears and lungs clear, not a single cough or sneeze during her exam. Oh, did I mention that there were two med students attending with the pedi? Oh, well, I'm sure it's part of their pediatrician-in-training education to learn how to deal with wacko first-time mothers.

The pedi did give me a prescription for an anti-tussive/decongestant to help with the runny nose and cough (I guess they took my word for it). Hopefully the runny nose will clear up before we leave Thursday. If not, I'll have to trust that my parents, who raised three daughters, can manage ;)

Cough, cough

Reese has had a low grade fever (99-99.2) on and off for the past week. Technically, that's not even a fever, and since she's been in great spirits, I've resisted the urge to take her to the doctor "just in case"...

OK, I confess, I tried to make an appt. with her pedi today since we're going out of town, but the office was closed due to the weather. Houston's currently having the worst flooding since Tropical Storm Allison, and we're expecting another 10 inches of rain tonight.

Anyhoo, I digress. Reese woke up around 10:30 tonight coughing a bit, so I gave her some cough medicine and put her back to bed. I hope I can get an appt. tomorrow, and I hope she isn't sick :( She always seems to get ill right when we're about to leave for a trip. Obviously I'm not upset with her for getting sick, but it's so hard to be away from her even if it's just a minor cough/cold. Poor Weezie...

Happy Father's Day!

I meant to wake up early this morning and let Jim sleep in. Of course, when I did manage to wake up, I found myself alone in bed, and it was 9AM! Jim had already gotten Weez up, changed a gigantic poopie diaper, and given her her morning bottle so I could sleep in. He's always done this on weekends and still does even though I'm a SAHM now. Just one of the reason he rocks! Weez gave him his gifts (an iPod RoadTrip so he can listen to his iPod in his car, and one of those terribly tacky fiber optic plant things. I gave it to him with the caveat that it had to go in his office and not in our home, LOL) Side note: OK, I know she should be off bottles by now, but I'm in denial about her growing up. She takes sippy/straw cups during the day, but I still give her a bottle in the morning and one at night. I haven't even tried to wean her off these bottles. I've been saying that I'll wean her at 18 months - that's just a few weeks from now. It will be harder for me than it will be for Weez, I'm sure).

We headed over to my SIL's for Father's Day lunch. I love going over there for family gatherings; she always invites my side of the family, and it's always so pleasant and relaxing. She has a beautiful kid-friendly home on 3 acres with a stocked pond in the back. A typical gathering involves copious amounts of delicious food, some people fishing, some people napping on the porch, kids laughter in the air as they run and play. When I think of 6,000 sq. ft. homes, I tend to think of cold, museum-like spaces, but my SIL has created such a warm, comfortable atmosphere - almost cozy, even! Dandy and Ong Ngoai got their presents - mugs with a pic of Weez (see inset) and gift cards to Academy. We gave them mugs of Weez last year, and I plan on keeping up the tradition. It'll be cool to see when they have a "complete set" in 18 years :)

Weezie had a wonderful time playing with her cousins and getting the attention of two sets of grandparents and her aunts (my sister joined us) and uncle. She used to be really reserved at family gatherings as she is whenever she's around people she doesn't see regularly. She's definitely gotten over her reservations - she was singing, dancing, and being her usual funny self today.

When we got back, Jim and I went for a run at the club after dropping Weez off at the club daycare. I just started a 30-day fitness regimen with a trainer - basically working out every day and giving up alcohol, rice/flour/potatoes after breakfast, anything fried, and diet soda. I also have a 2 cup limit on coffee (I'm a pot-a-day drinker), and no more ciggies when I have a drink (obviously since I can't drink). Once the 30 days are over, I can start incorporating things back in moderation. I've been on it a week and feel GREAT. I've only lost a pound, but one of the primary reasons I wanted to do this is to make a lifestyle change. I want to raise Weeze healthily, and in order to do that, I feel like I have to set a good example for her. Obviously I hope to lose weight, but I already feel that doing this regimen is worth the effort.

All in all, a wonderful day with my extended family and awesome hubbie. I know it's Father's Day, but I feel pretty blessed myself...

Reason #16 I'm going to Hell

I was trying to pick up around the house this morning. Although Jim said it's not "my job", I do feel obligated to keep the place in order while I'm a SAHM. Weez had other plans and was completely underfoot. In a stroke of genius, I handed her a clean Swiffer duster (one of those short handled jobs), and showed her how to "dust". She dusted contentedly, giggling away while I finished loading the dishwasher. Too bad they don't hire out chimney sweeps anymore - momma needs a new pair of shoes.

In an effort to keep the place tidy (which any mother of a toddler knows is impossible. Just call me Sisyphus.), I bought a Roomba. I love home/kitchen gadgets but had not gotten one since I was suspect of its claims. Several friends raved about them, however, so when I got a coupon in the mail, I broke down and bought one. I tried it out this morning; it worked fantastically... for 30 minutes. I called customer service, and they instructed me to leave the unit plugged in for 72 hours to charge undisturbed. It should then run for 2 hours after a 3-hr charge. If it lives up to that, I'll be a happy camper because it did do a good job on our hardwoods, tile, and area rug until it pooped out. Poor Roomba. Fingers crossed it'll work better after the 3-day jumpstart.

Sweet Freedom

I resigned!!!!!

I actually resigned almost 45 days ago, and June 1st was my last day of work. I was on a work order at a client site until May 31st, so the timing was right.

It was a very difficult decision to leave since so much of my identity has been wrapped around my career/salary. I also felt pressure (self-imposed, really) to "do it all" - be a super-mommy and excel at my job. I was not really doing either to the best of my ability, which just kills me. Probably from others' perspectives I was still doing great, but when I know I could be doing better... And really, doesn't my daughter deserve better than "good enough"?

I'm confident I made the right decision, and I'm looking forward to staying home with Reese for the next few years. It may not pay very well, but I think this will be my most fulfilling/rewarding job to date. I hope I am up to the challenge of the toughest, if this past week is any indication, boss I've ever had :)

Another milestone ticked off the list....

Well, it finally happened. The day I knew would come when least expected it.

Weez fell off my bed.

She started crying at 5:00 AM this morning, and normally if she wakes up she'll go back to sleep after 5 minutes of CIO. This morning she wouldn't go back to sleep, so I brought her to my room (okay, so I actually woke Jim up and told him to get her, LOL). I later woke up to get showered, and she was still sound asleep in the middle of the bed. Now I KNOW better than to leave her (Murphy's Law and all), but she was sleeping so still, like an angel...

I heard a crash and a squeal 5 minutes later, and I ran in to find Weezie on the floor! Luckily, I had thrown a comforter on the floor at some point, and she landed on that. I swooped her up, and she had a big grin on her face like it was fun!

Another milestone passed, mom/baby unscathed....

My little Picasso

Here's my latest acquisition, proudly hanging in my kitchen. It's a piece by a budding young artist that's on the rise. She's a bit pricey, but I've managed to work a deal to pay her in cheese doodles...

Back in the game...

I took Weez to the pedi Monday for the persistent fever, and it turns out she has raging ear infections in both ears. Her strep throat was clearing up after the Bicillin shot, but it was doing nothing for her ears, apparently. They gave her a shot of Rocephin (another penicillin), and her fever finally broke. She was back in school yesterday and is having a blast. I'm told she "plays hard" on the playground, and two skinned knees yesterday certainly support that :)

I just hate having to give her all these antibiotics, but what are you going to do? I'm not going to let her suffer through ear infections, but it's worrisome how many she's had to take in her 15 months. She's been on Augmentin, Omnicef, Zithromax, Omnicef again, Bicillin, and Rocephin. What's sad is that her pedi said that the number of ear infections she's had is not unusual for her age, and she's not yet at the stage where they would consider inserting tubes in her ears. The hope is that she'll get through this cold/flu season and that by the next cold/flu season, her ear canals will have developed such that she'll be less prone to infection when she gets a cold.

I have to admit it's times like this when I think I don't want to have another child. It's just so frightening to have a sick child that you can't help, and it's the worst feeling. I don't know if I could handle having two sick children... I'm sure I'll be back on the "I want to have another baby" wagon as soon as I see someone's cute newborn. For now, though, Weez is my world and it's all I can do to keep her safe, healthy, and happy.

Hmmmm....

I wonder how Weezie got strep.....

Thursday, April 06, 2006

Hot, hot, hot!

Can't write too long, but Weezie has strep! Poor little Weezie! I can only imagine the pain she's in, and she's being a real trooper considering she has strep and has had a fever since Monday evening. It hovered around 100 Monday and Tuesday, but yesterday went up to 101. I took her to the pediatrician. On a hunch, they checked her throat, and sure enough, a sample confirmed she had strep.

She's been on a Motrin-Tylenonl-tepid bath regiman since yesterday, and her temperature is back up to 103.5 after going down to 100.2 this morning.

Get better, Baby, get better!

It's hard being a single mom...

Jim went out of town Saturday morning and won't be back until Wednesday (note to any stalkers out there - I have a Mag Lite I'm not afraid to bean you over the head with if you try to break in. It's next to my bed. Right by the shotgun.) The title of my post is tongue-in-cheek, of course, because my little week alone can't begin to compare with a being a true single mom.

When Jim's out of town, it reminds me how much he helps out. How am I going to reach the top shelf? Who's going to open jars and soda cans for me? In all seriousness, I wouldn't be able to do this whole working mom thing without him. He gives her bath, packs her diaper bag, and gets her dressed in the morning (note: I do have to lay out clothes for her so that she doesn't end up going to school in pajama bottoms, pink shoes and an orange top).

Part of me thinks, "well, he's supposed to help, so what's the big deal?" If I go by what I hear on my parenting board and girlfriends, however, most husbands aren't nearly as involved. One of my coworkers (male) proudly announced to me that he had changed his third diaper this past weekend. His daughter is 6 weeks old! Can you imagine?

Anyhoo, Weez and I are pretty lucky girls.

Baby blubber

Mine, not Weez's. She's perfect :)

I have managed to gain 7 lbs since the beginning of the year. That, coupled with the fact that Reese is now 15 months old, renders my "oh, I just had a baby" excuse obsolete. I'm fairly good about working out, but my eating habits are atrocious. We eat out almost every night, and it's impossible for me to choose the grilled chicken with steamed vegetables when there's linguine with Alfredo sauce on the menu. Mmmm, carb-loaded, cheesy goodness.

Not to mention that I've fallen into that Mommy trap of finishing Weezie's food. Grilled cheese sandwiches, mac&cheese, chicken nuggets... it doesn't count if I'm eating it standing up, right?!

Be careful what you wish for...

Weez is walking! She's been literally running with her push toy since January, but she would never let go. I figured she would be a late walker since she didn't crawl until 11 months, but I admit I was starting to get a little anxious about her starting to walk. It didn't help that every where I turned, someone was asking that dreaded question - is she walking yet? No, but she can do quadratic equations in her head! OK, not really, but I swear she's normal!

We were at a girlfriend's about a week ago (March 10), and she suddenly let go of the chair she was holding onto. She stood hesitantly for a few seconds with a "what the Hell?!" look on her face, and then took 3 steps towards me. There was no going back after that - she is all over the place now! I'm convinced that she waited to walk until she could do it well. That's my Weezie!

Sometimes I miss the time when she was immobile, but I have to say that there's nothing cuter than having her walk up to me, wrap her arms around my legs, and look up at me with those big brown eyes. She's so freakin' adorable!

13 months going on 13 years...

Reese went to her first "friend" birthday party last weekend. A is one of her little playmates from daycare, and his father has always referred to Weez as "A's girlfriend". Little does he know that Weez has four boyfriends since three other little boys' dads think the same thing. A will follow Weez around wherever she crawls. Sometimes she gets tired of him following at her heels, and she'll turn around and smack him in the face; other times she'll give him a hug. It's hilarious!

I find it amusing that fathers of boys are quick to attribute signs of studliness to their sons, while fathers of girls have knee-jerk reactions to protect their daughters from said signs. When I told J about the party, he asked, "Um, he's okay, right? He doesn't have ideas does he?" He was referring to A.

The 1-year old.

No, honey, I don't think he has any designs on Weez. No devious plans to slip her "a little extra" in her milk and inviting her to see his crib...

Weez had a great time at the party, in no small part due to the attention she was getting. She is such a ham; I think she thought the party was for her. Not such a bad thing, either, since the parents had gone all-out with the catering/decorations, moonwalk, and professional clown. Ummm, does J count as a professional clown? My sister-in-law hired a petting zoo and ponies for her son's first birthday. Suffice it to say that Weez's first birthday was not so well planned out. Oh well, thank goodness I have no problems with implanting a few memories here and there. I can just see myself in a few years...

Remember, Weez, when we had that giant moonwalk for your party? Oh, and the ponies, you had so much fun!! Too bad about that fire destroying all the pictures... At least we still have the memories!

Tick tock, tick tock...

and that's not my biological clock...

There's no such thing as TMI once you've given birth...

You know, it's strangely satisfying to get a "big one" when you're aspirating the boogers out of your child's noise. Kind of like when you pop your significant other's zits. Admit it - you know you've done it!

I'm pathetic

Today was the first morning we attempted to start Weez off in the toddler room (as opposed to starting off in the infant room and then being moved over to the toddler room after I've gone). What a disaster - she just screamed and clung to me when I tried to leave. Tears and snot everywhere... and Weezie was a mess, too! This never happens when I drop her off in the infant room. She usually doesn't bat an eyelash when I leave and just gives me that "yeah, mom, go ahead and go, you're embarrassing me" look. I know she just needs time to adjust, but it breaks my heart. I asked them to let her stay in the infant room all day today. I know, I know!!

Mommy economics

So I just spent $150 at Gymboree to save $75 off my next $150 purchase.

This stuff is like crack.

Singing the mama blues...

Somehow my little newborn became a toddler when I wasn't looking. Seriously, it's like those little pills you drop in water that magically expand to became a spongey purple dinosaur. It's fascinating to watch her develop and learn, yet part of me wants to swaddle her up tight so she stays my little baby forever. My own little baby bonsai project, if you will.

They're transitioning her to the toddler room this week at daycare. I wouldn't have minded keeping her in the infant room forever - they love her almost as much as I do and teared up when they found out she's being transitioned. They actually transitioned younger children ahead of Weezie because her teachers (with only a teeny bit of encouragement from me) plotted to keep her in the infant room. It was rather comical, actually. Any time the daycare director walked into the room, they would pick Weezie up as if she were still a helpless little infant. I guess the helpless act wasn't working anymore when Reese started shaking her finger at them and saying "no, no, no!". I finally faced the reality that she has outgrown the the room and needs more stimulation and approved the daycare moving her up.

She's spent the last two afternoons with the older children, and she's doing really well. They have music classes and go to the playground twice a day, and I think she's having a lot of fun (ok, I admit I've snuck over there to check on her. Once. Maybe twice.) I can't help but think, however, that it's a slippery slope from the toddler room to graduating and going off to college... Waaahhhh!!!

Happy Birthday, Baby Girl!

Well I blinked, and Weez turned 1. How did that happen? I swear it was just yesterday that I was politely asking my angel of mercy (read: anesthesiologist) for just "a little extra" in my epidural.

What a bittersweet day for a momma. On one hand, I'm celebrating the anniversary of the day I was blessed with the sweetest, smartest, funniest, adorablest baby in the world. On the other, it's a reminder that she won't always be a little baby... that cuddles from mommy won't always make things better. I wonder if I put her in a shoebox if I can keep her little forever. You know, like fish, that only grow as big as their tank allows. She'll look a little funny, but she'll still be my itty-bitty baby.

We're having her party on January 7th as it's easier to get people together on a weekend other than New Year's weekend. I expect we'll be doing that every year since her birthday is so close to both Christmas and New Year's eve. On her birthday, proper, however, we took her to Chuck E. Cheese's. I figured that even if she couldn't ride the rides, she'd enjoy watching the other children. I guessed right - she had a blast. She was literally squealing with delight, and they even had a few toddler rides for her (though her favorite part of the rides was pushing the change button to get change. Did I mention she's just like her dad?)

Christmas Redux

We had a lovely Christmas this year. Jim's family traditionally has a Christmas Eve celebration, rather than Christmas day, so it works out well for splitting Weezie time between the two sets of grandparents for the holidays.

I brought Weez over in her pretty black velvet dress, white stockings, and patent leather Mary Janes so we could snap a few pictures in front of the tree. She looked just like a little doll! After pics, we changed her into her Christmas long-johns so the fun could begin! She seemed to have a great time. As typical with most children her age, she loved all the paper and ribbons most. She did seem to really like some of her new toys, though. I think her favorite is an Elmo boombox. She pushes the buttons to play songs, and she'll sway and flap her arms like she's dancing. How freaking cute is that?! When I helped her open it, I found myself saying, "Look Weezie! It's Elmo and Dorothy, and Mr. Noodle!". Wow, how my life has changed!

We went over to my parents' home for the traditional Vietnamese Christmas meal of lasagna and garlic bread ;-) It was really nice spending time with my family, and Weez had a blast being the center of attention. She is quite the ham-bone. She definitely gets that from Jim!

All in all, Weezie's first Christmas was wonderful, and I was reminded how blessed I am with my dear friends and family.

Coming up for air....

The movers are coming tomorrow, and we're nowhere near finished packing.

I've resorted to giving stuff away. I dropped off ten garbage bags of clothes at the local charity thrift store and freecycled 20 pairs of shoes, a phone charger, 3 lb hand weights, 4 1-gallon bags of travel toiletries, a broom vac, and, this was a hard one to give a up, my cherished Duran Duran poster. Sniff...

Oh, did I say this house was for sale?

I'm taking a little mini-break from packing (in other words, I'm procrastinating). We put our house on the market in October...basically for shits & grins. If we happened to sell it, then great... if not, we're in no hurry to move. Our realtor told us that if it didn't sell by November, it wouldn't sell until Spring because Winter is a dead time. We were just about to take it off the market when a buyer came in one weekend and submitted a contract the next day.

Oh shit.

That pretty much summarizes my reaction. I have mixed emotions about the move (note the reference to just myself. Jim is ecstatic - think Scrooge McDuck swimming in his money vault). While I'm glad we sold the house, I already had visions in my head about Weez's first Christmas and first birthday here. I love this place, and it would have been nice for Weez to have memories of growing up here. Oh, well, I guess as long as we're together as a family it doesn't really matter where we live.

I'm now in the process of trying to figure out how to cram 3000sq. ft worth of belongings into 1400sq.ft. We plan to build another home on a lot we own in the same neighborhood, but in the interim we're moving to an apartment. In the past two weeks, I've had to find movers, storage, a place to live, and a new home for Mr. Biggs. Needless to say, everyone's getting gift cards this Christmas.

Once we're finished with the move, I'll be a little more excited about planning the next house. Right now I'm teetering on the brink trying to keep it together...

I Hope this Doesn't Warp Our Daughter...

I have a confession. While we still occasionally call Bean, "Bean", a new moniker has taken over.

We call our sweet, angelic, doe-eyed beauty... Weasel. And she answers to it. It all started when her dear cousin referred to her as "Baby Weese", and it went downhill from there. I didn't realize how much we used that nickname until a girlfriend exclaimed when we showed up at her house, "Oh, you brought Weasel!".

So, our dirty little secret is out. I see years of therapy ahead of the Weez.

Snoooze....

I stayed in bed until 9:45 this morning. Wow - I can't remember the last time I stayed in bed that late - certainly not since Bean was born. She woke up at 7, and Jim brought her to bed with us. If we're lucky, she'll fall back asleep for a bit after she eats. Unfortunately, this morning she decided to play her new favorite game -- "Smack Mommy in the Face and When She Moves, Grab Her Face as Hard as Your Chubby Little Hand Can Squeeze".

Jim took her downstairs to play with her so I could steal a little more sleep. I didn't wake up until 9:30, and I laid in bed listening to the sounds of my husband playing with our daughter - silly songs interspersed with running, squealing, and crashing sounds. It's moments like this when I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

I finally went downstairs, and Jim had a big pot of coffee ready for me. We chat about our plans for today (not much since Bean has a bit of a cough), and then he says, in a serious voice you would use to tell someone you're going to an IRS audit meeting, "Oh, I need to go watch the UT-A&M game today at Texadelphia."

Hmmm, coincidence? In any case, I still feel pretty darn lucky :)

When the Cat's Away, the Mice Will Play...

We had a wedding to attend Saturday night, so I dropped off Bean at my parents' for an overnight. She absolutely loves my parents and has spent several successful overnights with them (including a 3-night stay when I went to Rachele's wedding).

While I adore my little Bean, it's nice to have an evening out sans poopy-maker. I partied like a rock star! Okay, so I only had 2 drinks and snuck a couple of cigarettes, but it was nice to get out. Of course I'm afraid I've become one of *those* moms that just can't stop talking about their kid. Can you blame me? ;-)

Monday, November 14, 2005

Yes, I'm a slacker...

Rachele posted a link to Fear and Trembling on her blog, so I felt compelled to make an update. It's been exactly three months since my last post. Sad, eh? So in the last three months, Bean has:

- learned how to wave "bye bye"
- developed three more teeth
- said her first real word. Nope, not Mama. Not Dada. Doggie. "Dah dah" to be exact. I hope Mr. Biggs' heart is warmed.

She has yet, however, learned how to crawl properly. At 10.5 months old, well, let's just say she's a little slow. Literally.

Her pedi said that we don't need to worry yet as she's doing wonderfully otherwise, but it does make me a wee bit anxious that she doesn't crawl yet. Her cousin (my cousin's daughter) was born just a day earlier and is already walking. Oh, well, Bean is much cuter ;-)

Sunday, August 14, 2005

Oh yeah? Well your momma dresses you funny...

Bean has been consistently in the 45-50th percentile in height/weight since birth. Not teensy, but certainly not an overly large child according to the charts. To put her size in perspective, she's 7.5 months old and still wearing 3-6months outfits with room to spare.

Yet not a day goes by without me hearing some variation of, "She's so big!" or, "she certainly doesn't miss a meal, does she?" One of my coworkers actually said, "She's a fat one, eh?" Um, excuse me while I set my daughter down so I can kick your ass.

Hellooooo, people! She's a BABY! Have you not heard the term "baby fat"?!? It's not "baby skin-and-bones", it's "baby F-A-T". Bah.

Uh-Oh, Don't Tell Jim...

Beanie is growing so fast... It seems like yesterday I brought my tiny little mouse home, and overnight she's turned into a veritable little person. She has not one, but two (!) teeth and is eating cereal, fruits and veggies. She's even moved to sleeping in her crib in her nursery - a far cry from the little limpet that had to sleep in our bed just a few months ago.

Jim and I haven't decided yet if we're having more children. Our little family of three just seems so perfect, and, admittedly, I'm afraid that our second child won't be as incredibly awesome as Bean. Lately, though, with Bean practically signing up for her SAT's, I'm starting to get the urge to have another baby. I know, lock me up now!

Let's hope driving ability is not hereditary...

So back in the day, I used to drive a spiffy two-seater roadster convertible... When we found out we were having Bean, I knew my days of zipping around town with the top down were numbered. All in all, a fair trade.

I've been driving what I call not-so-affectionately, "the dog car". It's the car we use to transport the dogs, and, well, smells like dog. I've been repeatedly pointing out to Jim that this car was just beneath Bean ("What will her friends think?"), and I regaled him with stories of how much she hated the car, how the ride was uncomfortable, how she really, really wanted to ride in a different car. If it were just me, I emphatically told him, the dog car would be perfectly fine. I am only thinking of Bean!

Well, my dear, sweet, wonderful husband surprised me this past weekend with a brand new car - just the one I told him Bean wanted! He made a crack about wondering when I'd have my first accident in it. Those other times were not my fault, I cried defensively. That pole just jumped in front of me! Oh, and that time I rear-ended that truck - well, he made a sudden stop and I couldn't help it! The time I backed into that Audi? Well, they shouldn't have parked on the side of the road RIGHT across from my driveway!

Suffice it to say, Jim didn't have to wait long. Ladies and gentlemen, on the SECOND day I drive my brand-spankin', fresh off the boat, still-smells-like-new-car SUV, I scrape the sideview mirror while going through a toll both...

"It wasn't my fault, really! The lane was obviously too narrow. I mean, the sign said, "Narrow lane, cars only!"

I'm not sure why Jim looked at me funny when I said that....

Yeeeeoooowww! Part II

Well it happened... She bit me. With teeth.

More of Bean to love...

At Beanie's 6 month checkup, she weighed in at 16lbs on the nose. Less than a week later, I brought her back to the doctor to check out a mysterious rash I was convinced was life-threatening. She had gained 12 oz in six days!

I should have known she was going through a growth spurt because our normally sweet little angel has been quite the cranky-pants. The last two nights, she's decided we were getting too much sleep for our own good and took matters into her own hands (or rather, lungs). I'm convinced this is some sort of cosmic retribution for bragging about how I have such a great baby. She's still a great baby... just a very loud one.

Her Father's Daughter...

As I was stroking Beanie's hair today , I noticed... a few blonde hairs. Say it isn't so!

At least she has my brown eyes...
