Simplify & Organize

Over the past year or so, we've been doing a lot better about simplifying and getting rid of things we don't need,  but we still seem to be overwhelmed with Stuff and Clutter. I keep putting organization off for the weekend, but there never seems to be enough time.

I think this is going to one of those eat-an-elephant efforts, so with that said, I'm going to make a list of daily tasks for myself. They'll be small manageable things (10-15 minutes on weekdays), and I'm going to do this for the next month or two to see how much headway I make.

This week's list (starting mid-week, no time like the present!)
  • Wednesday, Jan. 13 - Repack girl's annual crystal ornaments
  • Thursday, Jan.14 - Pick 5 clothing items from my closet and add to Jim's donation box
  • Friday, Jan 15 - Pick 3+ pairs of shoes from my closet to donate
  • Saturday, Jan 16 - Work with Reese to fill one large box for toy donation, finish packing up remaining Christmas decor and move to attic
  • Sunday, Jan 17 - Sort, file/trash the paperwork in the "miscellaneous mail/paper drawer (aka, where bills and other important things go to die)
  • Monday, Jan 18 - Drop off donations at Second Blessings (charity thrift store by my office). I plan on doing this every week or two and dropping off small amounts as we go through the things we don't need.
I know, the list seems so pathetically unambitious, but one little bite at a time, right?  I get stressed enough about the clutter, so I don't need to add the stress of a big To Do list on top of it.  Wish me luck!

I have the exact same dilemma and approach except I have not been organized enough to determine what my elephant bites are. Basically I plan to designate a room per week and I spend 10-15min a day in that room, and then 1-2h more on the weekend.

For me, writing things on a todo list removes the stress. Mostly because I have multiple categories on my list and I just put everything on a short-term or long-term list. And then I have a "today" list. I pick off todos from either short- or long- term lists and add them to my Today short list. I don't have to look at the short- or long-term lists much -- I just look at the today list. When it's empty, I "refill" from my other lists.

Today, I marked "send 18-24m clothes to Vy" off my list. :)

Yah, the act of writing a To Do list is very therapeutic for me, too, but then I start getting anxious as days pass and things aren't getting crossed off because I just have one long list. I like your idea of writing a short and long term list so I can use them as a base/direction for my "daily task" list. You know, as I type this, I think a MS Project plan is what I need, LOL. I know, I have a sickness.

I attempted the "I'll just spend 15minutes a day organizing/cleaning/etc." route. This works for a lot of people, but for me, I'm too ADD and undisciplined; it's better for me if I write a concrete 10-15 minute task to do.

Oh, and like a true project manager, I got Jim to pack up the ornaments for me (yesterday's To Do.) He actually volunteered so I guess I should credit him for that ;-)

I've taken care of a lot of the junk by weeding things every time we move. All I really have left is baby stuff. Our big problem is all of Greg's junk. Yuck.

Also, discovering the downside of so much kitchen space. Numerous junk/dump drawers.
